Europe needs to invest around EUR 1trn annually in innovation and digital as well as energy transformations and defence. Given limited public resources, all sources of private capital and liquidity must be mobilised.
Securitisation has a critical role to play as the key bridge between banks and capital markets, freeing up banks’ balance sheets while creating opportunities for investments. Reviving and scaling up the underdeveloped EU securitisation market will enhance our overall resilience.
The EFR welcomes the recent European Commission proposals on securitisation to review the capital treatment for banks issuing securitisations and to improve the due diligence and transparency requirements, as well as amend the capital requirement for insurers’ investments in securitisations.
While the new EC proposals for capital requirements, due diligence and transparency are steps in the right direction, further improvements will be necessary during the legislative process to enable the EU securitisation market to develop its full and true potential.
