Sir Peter Middleton
Chairman
Barclays Bank

Sir Peter Middleton was appointed Group Chairman at the AGM in April 1999. On 1 October 1999, he stepped down as Group Chief Executive following the appointment of Matthew W Barrett.

Sir Peter joined Barclays in 1991 as Group Deputy Chairman and Chairman of BZW. He became Chairman of Barclays Capital following the reorganisation of BZW in October 1997. In May 1998 he relinquished his executive responsibilities as Group Deputy Chairman and Chairman of Barclays Capital but remained a non-executive Director of Barclays PLC and Barclays Bank PLC. He resumed executive responsibilities when he was appointed Group Chief Executive and re-appointed Group Deputy Chairman in November 1998.

This followed a long and distinguished career in HM Treasury where he was Permanent Secretary from 1983 to 1991. He is Deputy Chairman of United Utilities, Chairman of Sheffield Urban Regeneration Company (Sheffield One), Chancellor of Sheffield University and a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.

Sir Peter was educated at Sheffield City Grammar School and at Sheffield and Bristol Universities. He is an Honorary Fellow of the London Business School and was a visiting Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford.

Sir Peter includes among his interests mountain walking, music (particularly opera) and most sport, including fishing.
